Septic pumping calculator

Not sure? Check the septic permit, an old pumping receipt or ask your county. Many 3-bedroom homes have 1,000 gallons.

Garbage disposal in the kitchen?

Pump about every

2.6 years

For a 1,000-gallon tank and 4 people, no garbage disposal.

Table value (no disposal)
2.6 years
  • Whatever the table says, EPA recommends a professional inspection at least every 3 years: measuring sludge and scum is more reliable than any chart.

Pick the year of your last pump-out to save a reminder to your calendar. No email or sign-up: your browser downloads a calendar file.

How this calculator works

It reads Table 1 of Kansas State University's extension bulletin MF-947, which estimates years between pump-outs for tanks from 500 to 2,500 gallons and households of 1 to 10 people1. The table assumes 50 gallons of wastewater per person per day, half of the retained solids digested, at least 24 hours of settling time in the tank, and no garbage disposal.

  • For 5, 7 and 9 people, which fall between the table's columns, the calculator interpolates in a straight line.
  • With a garbage disposal it shortens the interval by one-third, as K-State recommends1.
  • If you enter the year of your last pump-out, it adds the interval to estimate the next pump-out, and adds 3 years for EPA's recommended inspection2.
  • "Add to my calendar" downloads a calendar file with those reminders. It's created in your browser: no email, no account, and nothing is sent to us. The tool only knows the year, so a reminder for a future year lands on today's date in that year, and one that is already due lands a week from today.

years = table value (tank, people) × 2/3 if garbage disposal
next pump-out ≈ last pump-out + years · next inspection = last service + 3

Its limits

The table is arithmetic based on averages. Real households use more or less water and put different things down the drain, which is why Penn State Extension recommends most homeowners pump every two or three years3 and EPA recommends a professional inspection at least every three years2. Measured sludge and scum levels always beat the chart.
